Trace Dunbar Street Directory

To search Dunbar streets by address, begin with the physical property rather than a person’s name. The Dunbar street directory draws its strongest clues from county parcel cards, mapped lots, recorded deeds and city permit files. Those sources identify different roles. An assessment owner may not live on the parcel, and a mailing address may point somewhere else. Voter and older directory records can add evidence of a household, but neither proves who is there today. Keep the exact street spelling, parcel number and date of each result. That small record trail makes it far easier to compare online findings with files held by Dunbar and Kanawha County offices.

Walk a Dunbar Street by Address

A useful Dunbar address search separates property, ownership and occupancy. Start with one exact situs address, the physical location used on the parcel card. The Kanawha County Assessor property search can connect that address to a parcel ID, current assessment owner, mailing address and deed book and page. Each item answers a different question. The parcel anchors the land, while the book and page point toward the recorded transfer.

Build the street record in a fixed order. Save the date and exact text used at each stop because Dunbar records can change as county scanning work advances.

  1. Enter the full Dunbar address in the assessor’s Parcel Address field. Copy the street address, owner, separate mailing address, map and parcel ID, legal description, and deed book and page.
  2. Open the parcel in the county GIS viewer. Check the mapped shape and adjoining lots, but treat the map as an assessment aid, not a legal survey.
  3. Use the deed reference to search the county-linked land-record provider. Confirm the instrument and its legal description with the Kanawha County Clerk.
  4. Use voter data only when a person’s name and date of birth are already known. The public lookup is person-first, not a street roster.
  5. For an older household, check the Charleston-area Polk directories at the Main Library and pair the printed listing with a dated deed, census or newspaper item.

The result is evidence, not a promise of current residence. A deed can name an owner, a directory can list a householder and a voter result can confirm registration. None is a live household roll.

Dunbar Street Directory Search Fields

The assessor portal is the strongest first screen for a current Dunbar address. It is free and accepts several kinds of input, so a by-address search can recover when one spelling fails. Owner names should be entered as LAST NAME FIRST NAME without commas. District and property-type choices were not visible in the inspected text capture, and the public page does not state a coverage cutoff.

This screen is the practical start of a by-address search, but a blank result should lead to a spelling change or an office call, not a made-up parcel number.

Address Records Along Dunbar Streets

No single Dunbar address index contains everyone tied to a block. Instead, each record set identifies a role at a given time. The parcel card and GIS map are open online. The deed index is an access lead whose coverage and image fees should be checked with the Clerk. City permits and vacant-building registrations have no published public search, so those records begin with a narrow office request.

Use the parcel ID and legal description to keep the chain on the same land. Street names alone can shift, and a name alone can match a different Kanawha County property.

Note: Ownership, registration and a printed directory listing describe different roles, so label each Dunbar result with its source and date.

Read Dunbar Parcel Terms Correctly

Several short terms prevent major mistakes in an address lookup. The assessor card separates the place being assessed from the address used to contact the owner. Recorded land papers may rely on a description that outlasts the modern street number.

Parcel
A mapped unit of land identified for assessment. A parcel may contain a building, vacant land or more than one street reference.
Situs address
The physical street location of the parcel. It is the correct address anchor for a Dunbar street sweep.
Plat
A recorded drawing that shows lots, blocks, boundaries or a subdivision. It helps connect street labels to deed descriptions.
Criss-cross directory
A directory arranged by street or address rather than only by surname. Dunbar reverse-section availability must be checked in the actual library volume.

A mailing address may be a post office box, another city or an entity office. Keep it as a separate field. Never turn it into a second Dunbar household.

Map Dunbar Parcels With Care

The Kanawha County Assessor GIS viewer supplies the map side of a Dunbar address search. Begin from a verified parcel card, then locate the same map and parcel. Click adjoining polygons one at a time and record only the data actually shown in each popup. The live viewer did not expose its search labels, layers, legend or print controls during research, so those features should not be promised.

GIS adjacency proves only that mapped parcels touch. It does not prove that the owners know each other, share a household or occupied the parcels at the same time. The assessor also warns that its mapping is compiled from deeds and surveys for assessment and is not itself a survey. If a boundary matters to an estate or land question, the deed, plat and professional survey carry different weight.

For wider county filtering, the West Virginia assessment search offers Basic, Appraisal/Sales, Advanced and Prior Ownership modes.

The advanced screen includes county, district, owner, street, parcel, mailing address, deed and legal-description controls. No ZIP field was observed, so it should not be described as a ZIP-based address directory.

Follow Dunbar Deeds by Address

The deed chain adds recorded ownership history to a Dunbar address result. Start with the book and page on the parcel card. Search the current owner as grantee, the party receiving an interest, and identify the matching acquisition deed. Read the grantor, the party transferring the interest, then search that person or entity as a grantee in an earlier period. Keep the legal description, recording date and parcel references beside each step.

The county-linked Kanawha land-record page lists deeds, deeds of trust, liens, releases, church trustees, cemetery deeds, plat maps, assignments and agreements or affidavits. It did not reveal its modern cutoff, account rules, image access or fees during research. Its displayed phone also differs from the official record-room number. Treat it as a lead and confirm any payment or copy with the Kanawha County Clerk at 304-357-0240.

Dunbar Street Records Before Portals

Dunbar’s short municipal history sits inside a far older Kanawha land system. The West Virginia State Archives inventory lists county deed volumes from 1790 through 1910, grantor indexes from 1790 through 1946, and grantee indexes from 1795 through 1967. The assessor’s online land-book viewer states coverage from 1791 through 1962, with remaining years being scanned. Those are finding-aid ranges, not proof that every Dunbar property appears.

This two-part record clock matters. Dunbar was laid out in 1919 and incorporated in 1921, but a parcel’s chain can reach into older county books. The 1921 charter let the city council name or change streets and regulate house numbering. Research did not locate a dated citywide renumbering event. When an early address conflicts with a modern one, ask the City Clerk for ordinances, minutes, plats or maps instead of assuming a one-to-one number change.

Recent preservation work may change what is online. Kanawha County received a records grant for assessor property-document scanning, and a 2026 county agenda covered a later grant application. Save the search date and visible coverage.

Dunbar Permits Add Street Dates

A building file can tie activity to a Dunbar address when the parcel and deed trail leave a gap. The Dunbar Building Inspector administers planning, zoning and building code. The inspected permit form asks for property owner, property address, work type, project description, phone, email, architect or engineer, contractor and subcontractor names and addresses, total construction cost, and requested completion time. A permit expires after six months unless another term is noted.

No online permit or code-case search was found. Contact the Building Inspector at 210 12th Street, 304-766-0217 extension 7, or send a focused request for a known property and date range. The vacant-building form is another office-held address lead. It records the address, tax map and parcel ID, vacancy and utility status, owner or entity, local agent, signatures and filing date. These forms can identify project roles, but a contractor or agent should never be described as a resident.

Dunbar Voters Are Not Street Searchable

The public West Virginia voter lookup requires first name, last name and date of birth. It can return registration status, party, districts and polling place. It refreshes nightly and has a maintenance window from 12 to 2 a.m. This is useful to check a known person, but it cannot browse all voters on a Dunbar street.

West Virginia Code §3-2-30 permits inspection of active, inactive, rejected and canceled registration records during clerk hours, with a read-only terminal where one is available. Phone, email, Social Security, driver-license and state-ID data are excluded. A paid state list can include residence address and municipal or precinct filters, but the current form charges by product and restricts solicitation, advertising and resale. For counter access, call Kanawha voter registration at 304-357-0110. City election questions belong with the Dunbar City Clerk.

Note: An inactive or current voter record reflects registration status, not proof of who now sleeps, receives mail or owns land at an address.

Old Dunbar Streets in Print

For past household evidence, the Kanawha County Public Library Polk collection covers Charleston and neighboring suburbs from 1908 to the present. The public description does not promise a Dunbar entry in every year, and the collection must be used on the third floor of the Main Library. Search surname variants, initials, the printed Dunbar heading and old street spellings. A reverse or criss-cross section may put entries in address order, but its availability has to be confirmed volume by volume.

The Dunbar city directory collections deserve a separate shelf-based search when the goal is an older resident. On a street chain, record only the printed name, address, year, page and any notation supported by the volume. A missing year may reflect omission or an unavailable book rather than a move.

The September 1933 Library of Congress Sanborn set adds nine sheets of physical context. It may show street layout, a building footprint, construction material or labeled public and business uses. It generally does not name ordinary residents. Pair it with a 1930 directory or census entry, never with a claim that the mapped structure proves occupancy.

Dunbar Address Search Fallbacks

Online tools are only the first channel. For a parcel issue, call the Kanawha County Assessor at 304-357-0250 or its real-estate desk at 304-357-0256. For a deed, lien, plat or image question, use the County Clerk record room at 409 Virginia Street East in Charleston, open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The record-room phone is 304-357-0240. Ask about the exact instrument, available delivery format and copy cost before paying.

Older records move to the West Virginia State Archives research room in Charleston. Archives staff accept written research requests and do not perform research by phone or email. The Dunbar Public Library at 301 12th Street Mall can make local referrals, while the KCPL Main Library provides the verified Polk access. City permits, vacant-building filings, minutes and street actions remain with Dunbar departments. Under the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act, request a specific existing non-exempt record from the right custodian and ask for actual reproduction cost.

Limits of a Dunbar Address Directory

A Dunbar directory by street cannot provide a complete list of occupants. The assessor names an assessment owner, not every person at the property. A deed records an interest. Voter access is subject to statutory exclusions and is not an open by-street portal. Recent vital records, protected court files and motor-vehicle personal data have separate legal limits. West Virginia’s Address Confidentiality Program may also replace a qualifying survivor’s physical address with a substitute address. Do not try to reverse that protection.

Use two independent identifiers before treating a name and address as the same person. A parcel ID, legal description, dated directory page, deed role or district can reduce a false match. Keep uncertainty visible, especially when an entity owns the parcel or the owner’s mailing address is elsewhere.

Lawful use. Dunbar address records are for lawful personal research. West Virginia law forbids stalking, threats, intimidation and harassment, regardless of whether a source is public.
